Pest-Borne Diseases

Mosquito & Tick-Borne Diseases in Maryland

Mosquitos and ticks are more than a nuisance, they can carry serious diseases including West Nile Virus & Lyme Disease.

Fortunately, most of the more life-threatening pest-borne diseases, such as Malaria, are not currently a concern in Maryland as our MD Dept of Natural Resources mosquito control strategy is highly effective and includes routine & non-scheduled control spray treatments for public areas.

The medical term for Mosquito & Tick-Borne Diseases is arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) and it includes several families of viruses that are spread by arthropod vectors, most commonly mosquitoes and ticks. We are experts in mosquito & tick behaviors and pest control solutions, but we leave the medical and scientific information to the experts in those fields. We wish we could list exactly which diseases are of high and low concern today in Maryland for you, but that’s not how public health data works. Even the most useful data from the CDC and the MD Dept of Agriculture lags by multiple years. The best advice is to consistently protect yourself from tick and mosquito bites.

We have many customers who take their yard pest management extremely seriously because they have experienced an arbovirus. We have multiple customers with Lymes disease, one that was hospitalized for West Nile virus, several who have contracted malaria (while abroad), and many customers’ pets have contracted tick-borne diseases prior to working with us. Mosquito and tick bites are a real yet manageable risk and we are proud to serve our community by helping protect families from mosquito and tick-borne diseases. Pets Are Also At Risk For Pest-Borne Diseases

Heartworms, carried by mosquitos, is the most common and dangerous arbovirus for dogs, and less frequently, cats. Pets are also susceptible to many tick-borne diseases. We sometimes hear that people are concerned about having their yard treated because their pets play in the yard and roll in the grass. Many of the ingredients in heartworm medicine are the same as the ingredients in our yard treatment spray because they are effective and safe when used properly. Just as we advise our clients to stay out of their yard for 30 minutes after a spray so that it has time to dry, when applying the topical solution to your pet’s fur you need to wait 30 minutes before petting or touching your dog and also keep it from licking off the topical solution.
